I’ve by no means watched all his stuff do I’m not sure where the criticism comes from about neuroscience however I do see a ton of resistance to neuroscience in guitar playing for instance given from the Bulletproof musician podcasts and it is unwarranted. Probably clicks more with some than others. Removal of criticism from his videos? Good! People in general can fuck right off. I haven't heard his Lagrima, but my only criticism of his playing is sometimes on certain pieces, there is some buzz and noise. Rambling? You can just skip to the parts you like. I'd assume this is not the case with him. If not, not that big a deal unless it's crank nonsense that forms the core of a money making enterprise, and especially if it does harm. As long as it's something that can be found in peer reviewed literature and is accompanied by the usual caveats, then it's fine. I don't know what neuroscientific advice he is giving, so I can't comment on that. I am not aware of any arguments against that, and I certainly learned both together, and so did every one I know who studies CG. I haven't watched many of his videos, so I can't comment on his style of teaching.īut I can say that begginers should learn rest strokes from the beginning with free strokes. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions. These are probably as good as it will get with classical, but it's harder to self-teach than electric or steel string. If not get a method book and watch videos on the topics you're trying to learn or get the books and follow or Simon Powis at classical guitar corner. As a beginner you're prpbably looking for a structured course though, to which I would also say: find a good teacher if you can at all. On top of that much advice is available for free (some other channels worth mentioning include Merce Font, Kevin R Gallagher, David Jaggs aka dpjfilms, and Jack Sanders). Bradford Werner and many others will tell you to find a teacher if you can. I would much rather follow their advice, since they give you examples of excellent playing that will develop your ear and they are also generally also more realistic and honest (e.g. Since we live in a time where many fantastic players or didacticians are available online. Matthews certainly never graduated from a guitar program or was taught methodically by a real professional beyond an intermediate level. The really good advice moreover only comes from players who are either very good themselves or were taught by world class players. So even if much of the advice he gives is OK, most is pretty basic, which means it can be found elsewhere combined with much better playing. I can't listen to his interpretations at all, since they are sloppy (quite a few badly fretted notes, string noise, etc.) and don't seem thought through or musical. In other words, and most important for me he's not a particularly good player. I have no opinion on his use of science, but I would not be surprised if it's shaky, since he presents himself as quite sure of himself, while through his playing giving the impression that he has read or seen much rather than developed this through years of training and observation of a flawless technique, which makes me doubt his advice, especially when it comes to anything that is more than basic (again I haven't seen anything I would say is wrong per se, but neither his technique nor his musicality are at a level I would strive for). ![]() I do find him to be a bit rambly, which is personal taste and doesn't neccessarily discredit him. I was taught both fairly early on, but the focus was on free, which I agree is more versatile, and I only really started working on my rest strokes much later.īack to Matthews though. rest stroke argument is more belief or personal taste than anything. He gives decent advice for beginners, as others have pointed out. Let me clarify: I don't think Matthews gives terrible advice and is to be avoided at all cost.
